Herts Lynx

On-Demand Bus Service

Following the successful application to the DfT’s Rural Mobility Fund last year by HCC with support from NHDC, East Herts. District Council and Stevenage Borough Council, a new DRT (Demand Responsive Transport) bus service is due to start in September branded Herts Lynx.

Unlike traditional bus services there is no fixed route or timetable, instead passengers can pick up and travel to any destination within the operating zone or to any of the six key hubs (Stevenage, Hitchin, Letchworth, Baldock, Royston and Bishops Stortford) - see map

This is going to provide a step change in bus service provision for many of the towns, villages and hamlets within the DRT operating zone, including the overall provision of more bus services throughout the week, (Mon – Sat 07:00 – 19:00) and the introduction of a service on Sundays & Bank Holidays, (initially between 10:00 – 16:00 which could be extended subject to demand) as well as providing new journey opportunities.

To begin with the service will only serve two pick-up points in each of the six key hubs, initially based at a medical centre, (e.g. Lister Hospital) and high street but HCC have indicated that there may be the opportunity to add more pick-up points if demand requires. In addition it will also be possible for passengers to be picked up from one of the two pick-up points in each key hub and travel to another key hub.

As a DRT service passengers will need to book either online or by phone in advance to travel.

As a ‘premium service’ fares charged will be more than traditional bus services but cheaper than a taxi. ENCTS pass holders will be able use their passes but will be charged a supplement which will less than the full fare.

Virtual Bus Stops

Passengers will wait at ‘virtual bus stops’ which could be existing bus stops, pubs, post office, telephone box etc. or be dropped off at.
