The Queen's Canopy Platinum Jubilee Walk

To mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee in 2022, the villages of Kelshall and Therfield took part in the Queen's Green Canopy (QGC) initiative, or 'Plant a Tree for Jubilee' where everyone across the UK was invited to plant saplings from October 2021, when the tree planting season began, through to the end of the Jubilee year in 2022. The QGC will create a network of individual trees, avenues, copses and whole woodlands in honour of The Queen's service and the legacy she has built. This will create a green legacy of its own, with every tree planting bringing benefits for people, wildlife and climate, now and for the future.

The plantings have been mapped out to create a circular walk around the two villages and have also been mapped using what3words, which can be accessed by scanning the QR code.

Therfield - Kelshall Circular - ~3Miles / 1 Hour

Our quest was to find a route nearby which followed Government guidelines not to travel by car to exercise, and also try to avoid the incredibly muddy footpaths which currently surround Therfield. One we worked out which seemed to be infrequently used and, we thought, possibly less well known, starts at Kelshall North End. We reckon it's about 3 miles and took us about an hour.

Walk towards Baldock-at this time of year there is often a very good view to the right of the large herd of deer in the fields down in the valley. Just before arriving at Coombe Road, you will find a footpath on the left. Take this and walk along this undulating path back to Kelshall. There are amazing views across to Baldock and beyond to the Chiltern Ridge

You come to horse paddocks with just a couple of horses in them, including a very sweet Shetland pony, where you will have to go through several gates. Keep straight ahead and go through a gate which brings you out in front of a ménage - this was muddy -and make your way past the caravans through another couple of paddocks with gates and come out beside what was The Crown opposite the village hall.

Walk down The Street past two footpaths either side of Haggers Farm, and down to more horse paddocks on the left where you will find another footpath sign and kissing gate. Go through this and straight on, keeping the barns on your right and head for the five-bar gate -- now this is the only really muddy bit but only around the gate - walk diagonally across this field till you get to a bridge-be careful, it's a bit rickety, foll de woll--then on across the field on the other side to a kissing gate which brings you out on to Hoops Lane. Turn left and then follow the byway back to Therfield.
